MONTREAL - A 12-year-old boy who's charged in the shooting death of his older brother had been hiding a pistol from his mother, a friend of the brothers told QMI Agency. It appears the 16-year-old victim was shot in the head while his brother was allegedly handling the stolen gun carelessly on Monday evening.
The source told QMI the boy, who faces criminal charges, hid the gun in a closet.
"The youngest had a gun. I don't know how he got it, but he had one," said the brothers' young friend, who claims he saw the gun and the ammunition.
"I never wanted to see it ... he showed me the bullet cartridge."
The older boy was fatally shot in the head around 6 p.m. in a suburban neighbourhood near Trudeau Airport west of Montreal. Police questioned his younger brother all night before charging him.
The 12-year-old remains in custody and faces charges of manslaughter and use and possession of a prohibited weapon, which police said was a handgun.

He faces a maximum of three years in youth detention if convicted.

The Crown has said it will oppose bail when the youngster returns to court on Friday.
The friend said he spent the entire Christmas holidays with both brothers and said they had a close relationship.
"They loved each other," he said. "They never had real fights."
The shooting made waves all the way to Quebec City, where the government reiterated its plans to create a provincial gun registry.
