12 Year Old student ended up at school with neighbor's $20K in her Backpack

Taylor — A 12-year-old student who stunned officials at a middle

school in Detroit  Monday morning when they discovered she had

$20,000  cash in her backpack apparently received the money from

a  neighbor.

"The 12-year-old apparently got the money from another child who

lives across the street from her the night before," Taylor Chief of

Police Mary Sclabassi said Tuesday.

The neighbors have claimed the money, the chief said. Sclabassi

said police continue to investigate the incident, but declined to

elaborate as to why.

Police are not naming the student, her family or the neighbors.

The cash was discovered when the student went to the Sixth Grade

Academy, a school of about 600 students in the 13500 block of

Pine Street.

"The school district called us and said a 12-year-old student had a

backpack full of money," Sclabassi said. "The principal became

aware of it when she heard the student was giving money away to

friends. They brought in the student, secured the backpack and

retrieved the money she had given away. This is a real first for me."
