Dangerous offender status for Quebec man who tortured, raped woman

Dangerous offender status for Quebec man who tortured, raped woman

MONTREAL - A crack dealer who raped a woman, burned her with a lighter and beat her with a metal bar was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
A judge also declared Richard Graveline, 46, to be a dangerous offender.
The defendant nicknamed "Crash," was convicted Monday despite repeatedly denying that he was behind the night of terror in July 2009.
The woman had come to his Montreal apartment to buy crack but instead fell victim to what one expert witness called "paranoid jealousy."
He struck her with a metal bar burned her with a cigarette lighter and sexually assaulted her.
In handing down the sentence, judge Louise Villemure noted the victim agreed to have sex with Graveline "hoping it would stop the beating."
At nightfall, he handcuffed himself to the woman to keep her from escaping.
With time served, Graveline will serve eight years in prison and will be monitored for another decade following his release.
