A 64-year-old faces careless driving charges after 5-year-old Kayleigh Callaghan-Belanger was struck and killed by a city garbage truck on her home way home from school last month.
On March 7 Kayleigh and three other children — a 6-year-old boy, and two 13-year-old girls — were crossing an intersection at Cliffside Dr. and East Haven Dr. in Scarborough, when a garbage truck made a left turn, killing Kayleigh and injuring the boy and one of the girls.
Witnesses told the Star the driver climbed out of his truck and collapsed from shock at the sight of the injured children.
According to Toronto police, the 64-year-old is scheduled to appear in court June 6 where he will face charges of careless driving and making an unsafe turn. Police have not released the driver’s name.
