Fake cops scamming tourists in Vancouver on the rise
VANCOUVER(NEWS1130)- Vancouver Police have a warning for tourists.
A number of travelers from Asia have been duped out of their money by thieves posing as police officers.
It’s happened six times over the past two days in the waterfront area of downtown Vancouver.
The scammers even produce fake badges.
Police say the criminals ask to check your passport and wallet, and when the items are returned your cash is gone.
A couple of tips to identify police:
Police officers have to show some photo ID if you ask them
And if you’re in doubt as to the officer’s identity, call 9-1-1 where the operator can validate the officer’s status.
Anyone who has information about these thefts is asked to call 9-1-1 or Crimestoppers.
